Who we are
The Hillside Resort (“we”, “us”) operates a lake resort, cabin rentals, a restaurant, and Hillside Marina — a vessel rental operation — at 46042 238th St, Wentworth, SD 57075. This policy explains what we collect from guests and customers and how we use it.
What we collect
- Booking information— name, email, phone number, mailing address, and (for vessel rentals) date of birth and boater education info as required by South Dakota law.
- Payment information— processed directly by Stripe. We never see or store full card numbers on our servers. We retain only the last 4 digits and a tokenized reference Stripe gives us so we can issue refunds or recharge for damage.
- Identification— for vessel rentals, Stripe Identity may verify a government-issued ID. The underlying ID image is held by Stripe; we receive only a pass/fail result.
- Waiver + inspection records— the signed waiver, your signature, and photos taken during pre/post-rental inspection.
- Communications— the text messages and emails you exchange with us about a booking.
- Technical data— standard server logs (IP address, browser, page visited) that help us keep the site fast and catch errors.
How we use it
- To confirm, schedule, modify, refund, and follow up on your booking.
- To send transactional text messages and emails — confirmations, payment links, day-of reminders, weather-hold notices, and post-rental review requests.
- To comply with SD boating law, insurance requirements, and to defend the business in the event of a damage or injury claim.
- To keep operating the resort — analytics, fraud prevention, error tracking, support.
We do not sell your data. We do not use your information for ad targeting on other platforms.
Text messaging (SMS) policy
When you provide your mobile phone number during booking or check-in, you consent to receive transactional SMS messages from Hillside Marina about your booking. These include booking confirmations, payment links, waiver reminders, day-of rental reminders, weather-hold notices, and post-rental review requests.
We do not share, sell, or rent your mobile phone number or SMS opt-in consent to third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Your number is used solely for messages related to your booking and is shared only with the SMS carrier (Twilio) we use to deliver those messages.
Message frequency variesbased on your booking activity — typically 3–6 messages per booking. Message and data rates may apply.
You can opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message. You can re-subscribe by replying START. Reply HELP for help, or contact us at lodging@hillsideresort.com.
Who we share data with
We share only what's necessary for the services we provide:
- Stripe— payments, refunds, and ID verification.
- Twilio— SMS delivery.
- SendGrid— email delivery.
- Supabase / Vercel— secure database + application hosting.
- Law enforcement or our attorneys— if legally required, or to investigate a damage or injury incident.
We never share data with marketing networks, data brokers, or affiliates.
How long we keep it
- Booking records— 7 years (tax and insurance retention).
- Waivers + inspection photos— 7 years.
- Marketing email list— until you unsubscribe.
- Server logs— 90 days.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- Send you a copy of the data we have on you.
- Correct anything that's wrong (name, email, phone, etc).
- Delete your records (subject to the retention windows above for legal/tax reasons).
- Stop sending you marketing email or SMS.

Children
Bookings and accounts are for adults 18+. Minors are welcome as guests on a booking made by a parent or guardian. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we'll update the “Last updated” date at the top. Material changes will be announced via email to active customers.
